Dwarf Fortress: How to Make a Study
There is only one thing that is strictly required for creating a study, and that is a chair or throne. While these objects can be created in several ways, one of the simplest is to use a Carpenter’s Workshop to craft a wooden chair. Once such a chair has been made, Dwarf Fortress players should click on the build icon at the bottom of the screen, select furniture, and then place their chair in a room that will act as the administrator’s or noble’s study.

Once the chair is in position, players should click on the zone icon at the bottom of the screen and select office. Fans should then click on the chair twice, in order to turn its tile green, and then click accept to create the office zone.
As soon as the office has been confirmed, the zone menu should reappear, and players should make sure that they have the office zone selected. This selection will cause information about the office to be displayed at the top of the zone menu, and players should click the icon with the dwarf and plus sign that appears within that section. Fans of simulation video games should then simply choose the administrator or noble that they want to assign to the office to complete the process of creating their study.
To note, dwarves that are in need of a meager study can have the requirement fulfilled by a single chair in any room. Indeed, a chair in a tavern or a bedroom in Dwarf Fortress are all that these easy-going administrators need, though it is actually recommended that players create separate rooms for these zones. This is because issues can arise from having meetings in public spaces or in rooms with beds, and it is best to avoid them.
One final thing to mention is that if a study is not meeting a dwarf’s quality requirements, players should try smoothing the rooms walls and engraving them. This is done by clicking on the gray square icon at the bottom of the screen, and it can go along way toward improving the quality of a room. Roguelike fans can also try putting a statue into the study, and adding gems to that statue is way to increase the room’s quality even further.
Dwarf Fortress is available on PC.
