Usually, with each new expansion to the RPG, every class from the Dungeons and Dragons system is brought over, so players get some familiar options when they’re in a new setting. The latest expansion for Dungeons and Dragons returns players to Dragonlance, one of the most popular campaign settings to be released by Wizards of the Coast. Alongside plenty of new stories for players to experience, Dragonlance’s world of Krynn also has a lot of lore for fans to dive into.

One of the biggest changes the expansion will make when the upcoming Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen book releases is an alteration to the lore of mages and magic. In the setting of Krynn, most mages come from the powerful organization known as the Wizards of High Sorcery, which is split into three different orders. To better fit the current Dungeons and Dragons 5e and in preparation for the new One D&D system, this organization has been changed to the Mages of High Sorcery.

This allows the player classes like the Warlock and Sorcerer in Dungeons and Dragons to better fit the Dragonlance setting, as while these classes do cast magic, some fans might be frustrated were they to be grouped into the Wizards of High Sorcery organization. Already, a new Sorcerer subclass has been created around Lunar Magic, a type of spellcasting that comes from Dragonlance’s High Sorcery. There will also be changes to the Test, something that each caster in a Dragonlance campaign must take in order to learn the most powerful spells. In the old system, this would require players to travel to a location, breaking up the flow of a campaign.

However, in the new changes, the Test will be something that a mage player encounters on their campaign, as decided by the DM. Overall, it seems these changes are going to help the ease of transition for those who are already familiar with Dungeons and Dragons 5e but want to experience the Dragonlance setting. Alongside the new campaign book for players, Dragonlance is also returning in a new war game, which is set to release alongside the Shadow of the Dragon Queen book.
