The new Duke Nukem Trilogy is still expected for the PSP and DS despite missing the target 2009 release for Critical Mass, the first game in the trilogy. There should also still be 2 iPhone games in the pipeline, and there’s also the possibility that Duke Begins is back in development over at Gearbox. Duke Nukem’s facebook page has also been teasing Duke news with updates including a screenshot (image below) with a reference to something called D-Day. The facebook has been posting teaser messages since the end of November, 2009 saying things like, “Duke Nukem doesn’t stay down for long,” and, “Duke Nukem says it’s gonna happen, and when it does, shock and awesome.”
As for Duke Nukem Forever, it’s apparently still possibly in production. “We’ve never said that Duke Nukem Forever has ceased development,” claims Miller. “Yes, we released the internal team, but that doesn’t correlate to the demise of the project.” It’s anyone’s guess if this is confirmation of intent to finish the game or an actual admission to the game still being under development, but it can be assumed the project still isn’t dead for good.
Miller’s company may be smaller now, but with a focus on licensing the Duke Nukem franchise to other developers, he still sees a future for Duke, and most likely that includes Duke Nukem Forever. Miller even comments on how he would’ve done things differently if he could:
Wired recently ran a story about what lead to the layoffs at 3D-Realms last year and the 13-year production schedule for Duke Nukem Forever. It gives a lot of insight into what went wrong and supports Miller’s choice to work with external developers rather than developing Duke Nukem internally. Do you think Duke can still make a comeback after all these years?
